Autism or also called autism spectrum disorder is a disorder of brain development. Children or adults with autism have difficulty communicating and interacting with others. To reduce the symptoms of autism, a special diet should be considered.

Managing diet and choosing the type of food for people with autism is one form of special attention that must be applied. This is so that the food eaten does not worsen the condition.

Some nutritionists recommend abstaining from foods that contain gluten and casein. Actually there is no clear research on the impact of this diet on the symptoms of autism. But many claim this diet is effective in reducing symptoms of autism.

Gluten and Casein - Must be Avoided by People with Autism

Gluten is a protein contained in wheat, barley and wheat flour. Bread, cakes and pasta from wheat usually contain gluten. Autism advocacy group called Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) recommends that autistic people read food labels carefully and avoid gluten intake.

TACA also recommends avoiding millet and oats because they are processed near gluten processing and are likely to be contaminated. Both barley, millet and oats are widely used ingredients in cereals.

The brain of people with autism is mistaken by thinking that this protein is a fake chemical that resembles opium, which is a plant that is often used as raw material for narcotics. The body’s response to these chemicals can change a person’s behavior. Well, experts have found unnatural protein levels in the body fluids of people living with autism.

Because gluten contains lots of vitamins and fiber, implementing an anti-gluten diet will require strict guidance from nutritionists and doctors so that people with autism still get adequate nutrition.

Casein is a protein found in many food products. All dairy products contain casein including cheese, yogurt, cow’s milk, goat’s milk, sheep’s milk and even breast milk. Casein is the same as gluten, thought to affect metabolic processes in autistic individuals. Casein consumed by people with autism will make it difficult for them to communicate with the surrounding environment.

This is unfortunate because dairy products are a good source of vitamin D and calcium. Therefore, you must look for other foods to ensure you get adequate calcium and vitamin D intake. For example, from the consumption of green vegetables and sea fish.
